How to Stop Being a Pack Rat

February 9, 2017 by Nicole Garraffo

How to Stop Being a Pack Rat with A.B. Richards

Admit it. You’re constantly moving stuff off of tables and chairs to make extra room. You don’t have any shelf space. Or closet space. Or even space in your basement, attic, and garage. If this sounds like you, then you’re probably a pack rat. A pack rat is somebody who has more stuff than they know what to do with, and if you’re one, you need to get organized and fast. A.B. Richards can be your first line of defense. Our portable storage containers can help you get your life in order without having to go a far distance to a remote storage facility. So we want to give you some ideas about how you can stop being a pack rat.

Step One: Admit That You Are a Pack Rat

If you’ve come to the realization that you’re a pack rat, then you’ve probably also figured out that getting control of your space can feel like an overwhelming task. It can be particularly difficult for many pack rats because they’ve formed a sentimental attachment to a lot of possessions they need to get rid of. But understanding the problem can help solve it, according to the website the New Homemaker. You shouldn’t let yourself be held hostage by your possessions, if you feel they’re taking over your life, it’s time to take action. Being a pack rat can also cost you money. Your time is valuable and if you can’t find a needed item, you often have to buy a duplicate.

Getting Organized and Deciding What to Throw Away

One way to get things under control is to set deadlines for the work that needs to be done. According to the blog site Wise Bread, setting deadlines drives productivity.

The big question you should always be asking yourself as you attempt to declutter is, “Do I really need this item?” You must be brutally honest with yourself.  You need to ask, are you using the item and if so, when was the last time you used it?

Once you’ve made some decisions about what needs to stay and what should go, you should pace yourself. WikiHow suggests that you take a few minutes every day to pare down your belongings. You don’t necessarily have to throw everything away. Donate items to charity or give things away to a neighbor or relative. If you feel some of the items that you don’t need have value, have a yard sale, or put them up on eBay.

It’s also important to get a handle on paperwork. Read your mail and immediately recycle what doesn’t need to be saved. If you get newspapers or magazines, read them and recycle them quickly. Pay your bills quickly and keep track of any forms you need to fill out. If your child has handouts from school, read them and toss them.
