We’ve seen it around the country and here in the Northeast. In 2017, Hurricane Harvey flooded Houston, Hurricane Irma did heavy damage in parts of Florida and Puerto Rico continues to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Long Island, New York City and New Jersey were slammed by Superstorm Sandy not too long ago. Those are natural disasters on a grand scale, but other things can also go wrong and do damage to your home or business. Fire, flood or other disasters can leave you scrambling to rebuild or stabilize your property. When that happens, you’re going to need extra storage and that’s where A.B. Richards can help.
A.B. Richards Gives You the Extra Storage You Need
A.B. Richards rents portable storage containers for those times when you need extra space for your belongings. We’re a rental company, so we can’t let you repurpose our ground-level portable storage units, but we can deliver them to your home, business, job site or anywhere else they may be needed. When you’re finished with your rental, we’ll also come and take your storage containers back. We often help clients reset when things go wrong and we want to tell you a bit about disaster storage.
Getting Ready for Disaster
You’ll be in a much better place if you prepare for a disaster before it happens than if you’re caught napping. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers tips on preparing an emergency food supply. You should keep foods:
- With a long shelf life
- That require little cooking, water of refrigeration
- Meets special dietary needs of family members such as babies
- That feed your pets
- Aren’t too salty or spicy because those foods increase water consumption
If you’re storing food in the aftermath a disaster, make sure you check expiration dates and replace the food once that date has past. The ideal location for storing food is in a cool, dry place with temperatures between 40 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you keep food away from petroleum products, rodents and insects. You also need to keep utensils and a cooking area like a charcoal grill which must be used outside of the storage container.
If you’re dealing with the aftermath of a fire, it’s important that you check with the fire department to make certain you can re-enter the building, according to ready.gov. You should contact a relief agency such as the Red Cross if you need temporary housing and you should contact your insurance company to be instructed on conducting inventory. Don’t throw away your damaged goods until that inventory is conducted and also make certain to locate your valuable documents and records like, deeds and contracts, and store them for when they might be needed.
