How Weather and Moisture Affects Storage

January 25, 2018 by Nicole Garraffo

How Weather and Moisture Affects Storage

This is the time of year when weather is often on our minds. Winter is difficult on all of us. We have to bundle up and it can make travel tough. There’s a lot you have to do to protect yourself against winter weather. But what about the items you store in the summer? For that matter, other seasons can be a concern for storage as well. Moisture and humidity are always a concern. At A.B. Richards, renting portable containers is our business and we know that weather and moisture are big considerations when you’re storing items.

A.B. Richards Makes Storage Convenient

If you rent a storage container from A.B. Richards, you don’t have to worry about your items being too far away. We make storage convenient by delivering your unit right to where you need it. And we’ll give you the right container for whatever you need to store. Whether it’s our 20ft storage container, which is perfect for smaller storage jobs and can be delivered to smaller residential lots.

If you’re looking to take care of larger storage needs in areas with more space such as a business, construction site or industrial area, then you should consider our 40-foot storage containers. If you need extra room for storing items, try our 40ft Jumbo Storage containers with an extra foot of headroom.  We want you to get the most out of your products so we want to give you some tips considering the effects of weather and moisture on your stored items.

Cold Weather Storage

One thing you should watch when storing items in cold weather is your electronic devices. According to AccuWeather, electronic devices can be particularly tricky to store in cold weather That’s because the frigid temperatures can make batteries less effective. Leaving devices in the cold slows down electrical currents and makes them vulnerable to condensation. The cold can also hurt components inside the device.

Gadgets and devices should be stored in climate-controlled conditions. You should also be concerned about furniture because wood can crack or warp in extreme heat or cold. That can also be an issue if you’re working with leather furniture.

Moisture Issues

If you’re storing clothing either for winter or for summer use, you should be careful because sweat and moisture on clothing can lead to mold. Your first step should always be to wash all outfits that are being stored. And be careful about the material of the container you store items in. Cardboard boxes are more susceptible to moisture than plastic containers. It’s always a good idea to store your clothing in cool, dry areas. And make certain to clean your storage area before you pack items away.

Climate control is also important if you’re storing paper products like records, photos or collectibles like comic books or trading cards. All of these items can be threatened by moisture damage.
