Packing Your Storage Unit for Residential Purposes

Packing Your Portable Storage Unit for Residential Purposes by AB Richards

If you’re driving around a residential neighborhood it’s not unusual to see a portable storage unit in your neighbor’s driveway, in front of their home or somewhere else on their property. More and more, portable storage containers are being used for residential purposes for a variety of reasons. At A.B. Richards, we’re storage experts and we’ve long known about the many uses for these units. We want to help you get the most out your storage container. So we’ve put together some residential uses and packing tips for your portable storage units.

Portable Storage Containers Are Ideal for Residential Use

There are several reasons why you might want to use a portable storage container at your home. Sometimes it’s just a matter of needing extra space. Some homes have more storage space than others. If you lack closet space, have a smaller home, or even if you’ve just accumulated too much stuff, a 20ft storage container from A.B. Richards will help you get organized.

Changes in circumstance can also cause you to need extra storage space. If you’re about to become a parent, you may need some more room for a new baby. Or maybe you’re expecting a not so new arrival. If one of your children comes home from college for semester break, that may create a need for space. You might be about to have a new roommate or a new spouse move in and need to sort things out. Your home might be undergoing renovations or you could have to move temporarily, but whatever the reason, A.B. Richards can assist your residential storage needs.

Preparing for Storage

There are several things you do before you even start packing a portable storage container outside your home. According to the Apartment Therapy blog, it’s important to keep your items off the floor as much as possible. Use pallets to keep your items elevated. It’s also a good idea to wrap as many of your items as possible in an industrial plastic wrap to protect against dust. You should also get organized. Keep lists of everything that you’re packing and label each box with as much information as possible so you’ll know where everything is when you unpack.

Getting the Most Out of Your Portable Storage Unit

Once you’re done laying the groundwork, it’s time to get to the actual packing process. You should start with items that aren’t frequently used since the first items to go into the storage container will likely be the last ones you’ll be able to reach to pull out. You should build up from the bottom with the heaviest boxes and items placed on the ground and the lighter materials put on top. It’s also important not to pack fragile items in the same box as heavier items. Try not to overpack your boxes and try to cushion as many items as possible using paper, bubble wrap, packing peanuts or blankets and towels. The more fragile the item, the more cushioning you need. Seal boxes as tightly as possible with heavy duty tape.
