Storage Tips For Cold Weather

December 13, 2018 by A.B. Richards

Storage Tips For Cold Weather

Baby, it’s cold outside! And it may be about to get a whole lot colder. Most of us know enough to come inside from the cold or to bundle up. Though, if you’re storing items in cold weather, it becomes a bit trickier. How can you make sure everything you store will come out of storage in the same condition it went in? It can be a somewhat tricky proposition dealing with long-term storage during the winter. But if you take proper care of your items and take a few precautions, A.B. Richards will take care of the rest, by providing you with a durable secure place to store your items during the winter.

Storing Summer Clothes In The Winter

One of the most common issues when dealing with winter storage is taking care of clothing. Anytime you’re storing clothing, the first thing you should do is to thoroughly wash and dry anything that’s going to be put away for the season. This is your first defense against discoloration by stains from food and sweat and pests like moths, according to InStyle. This is also a good time to get rid of what you don’t need in your wardrobe. If you don’t wear something anymore? Why not donate it to charity? Try to store clothes in garment bags and choose hangers that won’t cause your clothes to wrinkle.

Problem Storage Items

There are items that can be damaged if they’re exposed for too long to freezing temperatures. So, make sure you’re careful about storing the following items:

  • Electronics, particularly with items that are battery operated
  • Liquid items stored in glass containers
  • Paint
  • Leather coats and furniture

Battery operated electronics can break due to the frigid temperatures and batteries can corrode. Any liquid items that are stored in glass containers may shatter due to the natural expansion during the freezing process. Paint should be should always be kept in a cool dry space as it can become unusable when left in storage for the winter time. Another material you may not want to leave out in the cold temperatures is leather. This material is easy to crack in the extreme cold.

There are items that are safe to store such as household items like towels, toilet paper, plastic wrap, toothbrushes and razors and foods like grains, flour, and pasta.
