The Importance of Labeling Boxes for Storage

At A.B. Richards, we’re all about keeping you organized. We’ll help you find the portable storage containers that are right for you for no matter what you want to pack. We have the products you need and we’ll deliver them when you need them and pick them up when you’re done. What you put inside your storage units is up to you. But we want to let you know that while our containers will help you eliminate clutter and bring more order to your home or business, it’s just as important to organize what you put inside our containers. That means labeling boxes that you store. Here are a few tips about the importance of labeling boxes so you can stay on top of everything you store.

Know What’s Inside Your Storage Containers

The first and most obvious reason to label boxes kept in your portable storage container is so that you’ll know what’s inside. The easiest way to label something is to give a general description, like “office supplies” or “comic books.”  but if you plan to keep items stored for a while, you’ll want to provide as much detail about it as possible so you can find items easier when it’s time to retrieve them. One good way to make sure you know where everything is stored is to include a detailed checklist of everything being put in each individual box. It will take more time, but it will make things go a lot easier when it’s time to unpack or if you’re trying to hunt for that elusive item that you need right away.

Keeping Track of Where Things Belong

In addition to labeling items that you’ve placed inside your storage boxes, it’s also a smart idea to indicate where they belong. If you’re moving, renovating or storing items that are seasonal you’ll want to return items to where they belong once you’ve unpacked. This can be done by simply writing something like “boardroom” or “master bedroom” on the box, but again, a better organization will save time when the boxes are unpacked.

The blog apartment therapy suggests a system of numbering each individual box to keep track of how many you have. They also suggest color coding each box so you can instantly recognize where to put it once it’s removed from the storage unit. If you’re storing boxes prior to a move or during a renovation, it’s also a good idea to prioritize which boxes need to be unpacked right away. Labeling a box “high priority,” will accomplish that. It’s also very important that the labels are clear, easy to read and written with a permanent marker that will hold up over time.

Making Sure Others Know What’s Inside Your Boxes

It’s very important to remember that you may not be the only person handling the boxes you labeled. Co-workers, family members, movers or business associates may need to retrieve the box as well. That’s why you should clearly list important information on your labels. A common message might be “fragile” or “handle with care.” You also might want to leave detailed instructions on exactly where items should be placed once they’re unpacked. If the box contains anything that’s potentially hazardous like chemicals or sharp objects, that should also be labeled.
