Tips for Maximizing Your Portable Storage Unit Space

September 10, 2015 by Nicole Garraffo

tips-for-maximizing-storage-ab-richardsThe very reason for renting or leasing one or more portable storage containers from A.B. Richards – the leading supplier of ground-level storage containers in the Northeast since 1982 – is to expand the living space inside your home or workspace inside your retail or office space.

You, of course, understand that space inside of your portable storage units is at a premium, and you ultimately want to be sure you use the space inside each one in the most efficient way possible.

Portable Storage Unit Packing Tips

To help you achieve this, the portable storage experts at A.B. Richards have put together some tips for maximizing your portable storage unit space, whether you’re using it to pack up your personal belongings during a renovation, to protect essentials as you prepare or recover from a storm or other emergency, to hold excess inventory or seasonal merchandise for your retail business or to store building materials at a construction site:

  • Shrink Wrap Furniture Edges and Drawers: Disassemble furniture such as tables for easier storage, and tape the associated hardware underneath so it’s not lost. Barring that, be sure to shrink wrap or use blankets, furniture pads, paper pads and/or plastic covers to protect your larger pieces of furniture, and always wrap mattresses in plastic. Wedge the doors of your appliances open, as you can use them for handy storage of bedding, towels, and clothing. Always clean your stove before storing. Wrap or box electronics, and keep any related cords with each piece of electronics.
  • Pack the Heaviest Items First: Items like appliances, desks, couches, and armoires should go into the container first followed by lighter items.
  • Wrap Fragile Items: Protect breakables like dishes, glasses, and collectibles by wrapping them individually before placing inside of a box.
  • Label Your Items and Turn Your Labels to Face Outward: Everything you store inside the container should have a label that’s easily visible.
  • Make Sure Everything Has a Lid: Unboxed items can become dusty and could get ruined, so be sure to place all small items in boxes that have lids or otherwise can be closed.
  • Leave an Aisle: To easily access each item you store, there should be a center aisle.
  • Pack Your Books Flat: Guard against spine damage by packing your books flat in a box, and don’t overtax your book boxes by placing only thick novels all in one box. Be sure to spread them out and mix them with thinner books or lighter paperbacks.
  • Store Windows, Mirrors and Screens on the Edge: Wrap them in blankets with heavy cardboard and place them on their side to avoid damage.
