Tips on Furniture Storage

Tips on Furniture Storage

At A.B. Richards, we rent portable storage containers for all sorts of reasons. You can have one of our units delivered to your place of business and have storage for extra inventory you might have. If you work in construction, we can deliver a portable storage unit to your job site and give you a secure place to store your equipment overnight. Maybe you’re preparing for a yard sale and you need storage for your goods.

A.B. Richards Units Are Ideal for Furniture Storage

Whatever you need stored, A.B. Richards can provide you with a safe, durable, portable storage unit. While we’ve seen many things stored in our units, we find one type of item that’s common for both our residential customers and our commercial customers. That’s furniture. A.B. Richards will give you a great place to store furniture, but we’d also like to make sure your furniture is in great condition when it’s time to take it out of storage. So we want to give you some tips on how to properly store all different types of furniture.

Cleaning and Preparing Furniture for Storage

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, there are several factors you should keep in mind when storing furniture. Wood furniture can dry out, fabrics can fade and electronics can start to fail while they’re in storage. They lay out several tips prior to storage:

  • Take apart wood furniture to prevent damage, removing table legs, headboards, and footboards.
  • Clean fabrics, sofas, and mattresses. This will protect you against mold.
  • Wrap all wood furniture and upholstered furniture with plastic wrap. Secure the plastic with tape but make sure it doesn’t stick to the furniture.
  • If you can, store electronics like televisions in their original packaging. Wrap any chords in bubble wrap and keep them with the electronics they belong to.
  • Polish brass, silver or nickel furnishings to prevent oxidation.
  • Cover furniture with blankets and pads to protect it from damage and mold.

Wood Storage Considerations

There are other things you should take into account while storing wood furniture. The website Hunker suggests putting furniture polish on wood to keep it from becoming too dried out. If you’re storing antiques, paste wax is a good protective sealant.

You should also protect the area where the furniture will be standing. It’s a very good idea to lay down plastic sheeting or a drop cloth on the floor below the furniture. This will act as a barrier between the floor and wood. An even better way to protect your wood furniture is to build it above the floor. Build a base for it if you can. Lay down planks, plywood or wooden blocks to create a platform for your furniture.
